Although I had been on the radio for less than a year (KRNW-FM, Boulder, CO), I felt like a grizzled veteran. Every day I arrived at the station with a sense of purpose. I played music by my favorite artists (Dylan, the Byrds, Spirit, Poco) and always made sure to turn the audience on to lesser known, but equally brilliant, musicians, poets, and visionaries (Melvin Van Peebles, John Renbourn, Frummox, Roy Buchanan, and Goose Creek Symphony). When I revisit these playlists, it rekindles my wonder for music as well as makes me long for the good old days when disc jockeys were America’s tastemakers.
